Went out to Great Swamp NWR on the first warm sunny day of 2010, and found tree swallows near all the nest boxes.
Tree swallow
Near the bridge on the road was this Great Egret
Then it was on to the boardwalks through the swamp.
Not many birds around. A whitebreasted nuthatch or two...
"What're you doing down there?"
Mother Goose -- literally.
Canada goose
Mallard hen
There were other critters though... this chipmunk, for one.
And the 'phibs... turtles...
... and snakes (eastern ribbon)...
and more snakes (northern water)...
And more northern water snakes...
And more...
And more!
Not to mention the occasional frog.
Lots to look at, including stumps
... and moss...
and shelf fungus...
and more stumps...
and leaves...
and even bark.
And, of course, a stump or two...
and more moss...
and even a grassy knoll in the swamp.
Plus evidence that some of my relatives may have been there before me.
